Christmas Shopping Guide

Have you started your Christmas shopping yet?

Have enjoyable days out with your friends and family by making trips out to local shopping area. You will find unique gifts for your loved ones, as well as supporting independent boutique owners and the work of local designers/ makers that they sell.

So far my work is being sold in two London shopping areas, both boasting creative independent retailers.

East Dulwich

This area will be holding a special Christmas shopping day on the
Saturday 1st December
ALL DAY!

This is a local shopping area to my home studio and I enjoy popping down to grab fresh foods and browse around the vintage store.

Columbia Road Flower Shops & Flower Market 

This traditional row of small shops open Friday, Saturday and on the Sunday with the busy flower market. You will find many London local artists and makers in each of these lovely boutiques.

In the lead up to Christmas these shops open

 every Wednesday 6- 9pm

And The Fourth Stockist is....

In the past week JHBeulah has been received by another two more boutiques in the local Southwest London area. This is the full stockist list so far:

Ed at ED Warehouse off of Lordship Lane has been in contact and will be stocking a very limited range of necklaces in the coming week.

Exclusive designs are in the making

Sally at Bias on Bellenden Road took the exclusive collar range on Wednesday of this week and sold two pieces in the first day! There will be a Christmas window display featuring the JHBeulah collars and a display cabinet especially for the range.

 

Bee at Marcos & Trump on Columbia Road has been selling my button bibs from the beginning of September and is stocking an evening range which will feature in the Halloween window display at the end of this month.

 

Catherine at L'Orangerie also on Columbia Road has just a single piece, which is the most precious item of the whole JHBeulah necklace collection and is made purely of vintage mother of pearl buttons.

Each boutique has been carefully picked for its ideal suitability to the brands aesthetic and ethos and I am thrilled that each owner have taken an exclusive limited range for their boutique.

I can assure my customers that they will enjoy their shopping experience in these boutiques as much as I do!

Brilliant Businesses

Fingers Furniture

Barry is a very talents carpenter who lives and runs Finger Furniture in Leicester, which so happens to be my family hometown.

We met at the Tweed Run in London this May, when conversation was struck up seeing the matching wooden mud guards and handle bars on his bike. Finger Furniture normally takes on commissional work for domestic kitchens as well as the interiors for camper vans, Barry's past work was on film sets most notably for Wallace & Gromit. Barry very kindly invited me to visit his workshop and showed me how he makes the bike mud guards and handle bars.

What to Watch

The Wartime Farm

This is a really interesting program where these three people in this clip, live and work on a farm, following the duties and daily tasks during the time of WW2. I have just finished watching the second episode of Wartime Farm and enjoyed learning about the Women's Institute and the Land Girls, which were both ran by Lady Gertrude Denman.

You will find some handy money saving tips, by doing things by yourself home grown and constructed.... like the hay steam box for keeping your stew going and saving the electricity/ gas!

The Necklace Line

Every item produced by JHBeulah are all individual pieces, though some may be made from the same fabric, there will always be variations in the final make up of the piece. JHBeulah is a practice that exercises’ eco principles as far as possible, as well as producing high quality items by the same disciplines and techniques as couture practice. 

Many of the pieces are made from raw silk taken from fabulous wedding gowns, lace purchased from French flea markets and always vintage buttons.

Inspiration

JHBeulah is an eco- friendly women's accessories brand, with the aim of diverting useable quality materials heading for the landfills and reinventing it into something entirely new. The story of this brand is very much lead by the production: protecting the British environment, promoting British made cloth and crafting the product in Britain.

Now that JHBeulah is selling full- time, the stock has moved to the UK online website Folksy which specialises in Modern British Craft.

From Folksy:

Folksy was created with the aim of showcasing the work of UK designers and makers. James Boardwell and Rob Lee came together to build Folksy in 2007 after being inspired by the energy in the craft communities in the UK as well as North America and Australia.The site launched in summer 2008, employed its first member of staff in 2009 and has since risen to become the most popular UK site for handmade gifts and supplies.

Folksy is based near the University in Sheffield. We have a team of nine full and part-time people all passionate to reclaim craft in the UK and promote the benefits of making things with our hands.

What we’re about

1. Strength in numbers. We believe that professional, portfolio and hobbyist designers and makers can reach a mainstream audience, test markets and grow their business more effectively together with Folksy than through costly galleries and boutique shops.

2. Cottage industries are the future. Small scale production and handmade goods offer ways to be creative, manage resources effectively and support local economies. We’re not anti-corporate but we want thriving micro-global people brands too.

3. Meritocracy is good for everyone. Folksy is not a juried site. We allow all designers and makers to list their work as long as it is hand crafted (no vintage, for example). Birthday Binding

I had the idea of getting a a book bound full of pages created each by a friend, as a gift for my partners birthday. My partner is the Creative Director of a renowned menswear House on Savile Row London, and so many of her friends work in the creative industry.

It was indeed well received.

From illustrations, photomontages and even a knitted favourite cartoon.


The book was bound beautifully, using cloth from one of her latest collections. Wyvern Bindery is the most traditional and professional in London, and its staff are very warm and friendly. Great characters! I also like the bikes chained up outside, which must belong to the book binders.

Planting Freecycle

Pursuing a more self sustaining lifestyle, I have looked on freecycle for handy freebies to aid this anti commercial battle. The other week proved to be a delightful break through.
Finding plants on offer can be like gold dust at times, and knowing how expensive these are to buy, this listing was not to be missed. Growing your own herbs, berries, veg and salad is instrument in establishing this desired self sustaining lifestyle.


I found a listing of plants on offer, by a fellow freecycle of whom has no become a friend. Being in the same freecycle group meant that we live cloe by and I am able to cycle over to her, whenever the is another plant she wants to dig up. Nothing made to waste in her garden and a real added credit to my garden.


Freecycle not only makes you think about your household items differently; in that they can be made useful by someone else when you no longer can use it, but it has also built up a community of like minded people and friendship have been formed.

I look forward to this winter when I can pick my next lot of plants from my fellow freecycler!
